Types of restraint straps

Also known as wall straps and metal straps, restraint straps are designed to provide horizontal or vertical restraint to walls when connecting floor structures and roof structures to masonry walls. These tension straps are used in order to prevent bulging and cracking. Restraint straps can be found on the underside of rafters, across the ceiling joists on timber binders and in other areas.

At Speedy Fixings, we supply a wide selection of lateral restraint straps, from galvanised steel light-duty restraint straps to stainless steel heavy-duty restraint straps. Our restraint straps come pre-drilled with fixing holes and are available in various sizes. Each restraint strap is best suited for a specific application.

Galvanised Light-Duty Restraint Straps

Our galvanised light duty restraint straps are made from galvanised steel and are designed for light-duty use, such as connecting timber pieces to masonry structures (i.e. timber beams to brick walls). These restraint straps are 30mm wide and 2.5mm thick plus, feature 6mm diameter holes at 25mm centres. Our best-selling wall plate strap within this range includes the 100mm galvanised light duty restraint strap.

Galvanised Heavy-Duty Restraint Straps

For heavy-duty applications, our galvanised heavy-duty restraint straps are ideal. These straps are suitable for horizontal restraint, including connecting timber floors to masonry walls. Some of our best-selling galvanised heavy-duty straps include 400mm galvanised heavy-duty restraint strap, 800mm galvanised heavy duty restraint strap and 100mm galvanised heavy duty restraint strap. These are made from galvanised steel and feature 6mm diameter holes that are at 25mm centres. These restraint straps are 30mm wide and 5mm thick.

Stainless Steel (A2-304) Heavy-Duty Restraint Straps

Our stainless steel A2 304 heavy-duty restraint straps are made from type 304 stainless steel, also known as A2, which is resistant to corrosion and ideal for high-temperature situations. These are designed for heavy-duty uses, such as horizontal restraint of roof rafters to masonry walls. Our stainless steel heavy duty straps are 28mm wide and 4mm thick plus, feature 6mm diameter holes at 25mm centres.

Stainless Steel (A2-304) Light-Duty Restraint Straps

Light-duty restraint straps are designed for vertical restraint according to the current Building Regulations. Our stainless steel A2 304 light duty restraint straps are commonly used for vertical applications, such as holding down a wall plate. Popular sizes include 75mm stainless steel A2-304 light duty restraint strap and 150mm stainless steel light duty restraint strap. These are 30mm wide and 2.5mm thick with 6mm diameter holes at 25mm offset centres.

Heavy Engineered Restraint Straps

These heavy engineered restraint straps are less than 40% of the weight and quicker to be installed than traditional heavy restraint straps. With an innovative design, these straps also overcome many fixing problems associated with traditional straps. These are made from pre-galvanised mild steel and feature a thickness of 1.5mm.

Light Engineered Restraint Straps

The light engineered restraint straps can be used for vertical applications, such as holding down wall plates. These are made from pre-galvanised steel and are quicker to install as these can fit over top floor joists and truss bottom chords.

Restraint straps can be ordered to any length up to 3 metres. For straps longer than 1500mm, get in touch with our team by calling 01206 793100 or emailing [email protected].
