What Do You Need to Build a Wooden Pergola?

Although sometimes they can be expensive, which puts many people off. But as the summer season is here, why not build your own? It’s cheaper and you get to create it exactly as you want it. Main Pergola Components
– Posts: These are the vertical supports that hold up the structure. They need to be stable and securely anchored to the ground.
– Beams: These horizontal supports connect the posts and provide the main structural support for the roof.
– Rafters: Placed on top of the beams, rafters form the roof of the pergola. They can be spaced close together for more shade or further apart for a more open feel.
– Lattice Panels: Optional but can add extra shade and support climbing plants.
Fasteners and Fixings
To build a stable wooden pergola, you’ll need fasteners and fixings. Here is a list of what you may require:
Post Shoes: These are essential for stabilising and supporting your pergola posts. Depending on your specifications, you could use Standard type 4 post shoes, or other variants such as Type 4D post supports for corner posts, or Type 4A post shoes / 4D if the baseplate space is tight.
There are many post shoes available, mainly cheap inferior foreign imports, but at Speedy Fixings we manufacture our own heavy duty, top quality post supports that will look good and outlast your timber pergola structure.
Through Bolt Anchors: To connect to a concrete surface.
A35 Framing Anchors: Allows for instant and accurate bending on site for all two and three-way connections. Suitable for wood-to-wood applications.
Sleeve Anchors: For masonry connections.
Joist Hangers: Specifically, Face fix hangers or Wrap over hangers are ideal for connecting timber to timber joists.
Truss Clips: Used to secure trussed rafters to wall plates.
Ring shank nails: Are commonly used in in softer types of wood where splitting is not an issue.
Coach Bolts / Coach Screws: Can be used for holding together timber and fixing metal to timber.
As this is an outdoor project, it’s best to use galvanised or stainless steel fasteners when possible. They are the best option as they are weather resistant, unlike zinc plated fasteners.
Always remember not to mix galvanised and stainless steel fixings/metalwork together!
