The Differences and Similarities Between Galvanised, Self-Colour, and Stainless-Steel Post Shoes

When it comes to securing posts for your construction projects, choosing the right post shoe is crucial for longevity and stability. At Speedy Fixings, our post shoes are available in three different material types: galvanised, self-colour, and stainless steel. Understanding their differences and similarities can help you make an informed decision for your next project.

Galvanised Post Shoes

Our fully welded galvanised post shoes, such as our Heavy Duty Galvanised Post Shoe (Type 4), are hot-dipped in a galvanising process that coats them with a heavy-duty layer of zinc, achieving a minimum thickness of 70 microns. This coating provides protection against corrosion, making them ideal for outdoor use in the UK environment. Typically, galvanised post shoes can withstand the elements for 40 to 70 years, offering a long-term solution for your construction needs.

Self-Colour Post Shoes

Self-colour post shoes, such as our Heavy Duty Self-Colour Post Shoe (Type 4), are made from mild steel without any additional coating. While they might not have the same level of corrosion resistance as their galvanised or stainless steel counterparts, they are still a viable option for indoor applications or projects where aesthetic considerations are less critical. Self-colour post shoes can be treated with paint or another protective layer to enhance their durability and lifespan.

Stainless Steel Post Shoes

Our stainless-steel post shoes are crafted from grade 304-A2 stainless steel, with the option to upgrade to grade 316-A4 upon request. Our 100mm Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Post Shoe (Type 4), feature a lightly brushed finish, giving them a sleek and modern appearance. Stainless steel is known for its excellent resistance to rust and corrosion, making these post shoes perfect for both indoor and outdoor applications, especially in environments exposed to high humidity or saline conditions.

Comparing the Three Types

Corrosion Resistance

– Galvanised: Offers corrosion resistance, making it ideal for long-term outdoor use.

– Self-Colour: Least resistant to corrosion unless treated with additional coatings. Best suited for indoor or low-exposure environments.

– Stainless Steel: Excellent corrosion resistance, particularly grade 316-A4, which is suitable for harsh environments like coastal areas.

Aesthetic Appeal

– Galvanised: Has a matt/dark silver appearance that blends well with industrial and rustic designs.

– Self-Colour: Offers a raw, industrial look that can be painted or coated to match specific aesthetic requirements.

– Stainless Steel: Provides a modern look that remains attractive over time, even in challenging conditions.

Durability and Maintenance

– Galvanised: Low maintenance due to its protective coating, with a long lifespan.

– Self-Colour: Requires regular maintenance and protective treatments to prevent rust and extend its life.

– Stainless Steel: Extremely durable and low maintenance, with high resistance to scratches and wear.

Practical Applications

– Galvanised Post Shoes: Ideal for outdoor fencing, decking, and other external structures where long-term durability is required.

– Self-Colour Post Shoes: Suitable for indoor projects, temporary structures, or areas with minimal exposure to moisture.

– Stainless Steel Post Shoes: Best for high-end architectural projects, marine environments, and places where both durability and aesthetics are paramount.
