Deep Dive Into Restraint Straps
You may know restraint straps as either tension straps or bat straps. Whatever you know them as, they are a necessary tool for the restraint of roof and floor structures to walls. The use of restraint straps is to stop the bulging or cracking of walls, commonly caused by repeated wind pressure. Having proper vertical and horizontal restraint straps in place will stop these issues.
Why Are Restraint Straps Vital?
The absence of proper, or indeed any lateral straps can be a cause for disaster. There have been cases in strong winds where the entire roof gable collapses, crushing nearby objects like cars and being a risk to passing pedestrians. This is obviously an extreme example, but it should be more than enough to highlight the importance of ensuring that the proper restraints are in place.
Choosing The Correct Restraint Straps
Depending on the exact implementation, type of building, level of exposure, and other environmental conditions, different restraint straps can be used. It is also important to choose the correct size for your application. When reading the size of a restraint strap, remember that the bend is included in the overall length.
Heavy-duty restraints are fitted in roof rafters, trusses and joists that are tied into masonry walls, while light-duty restraints are best deployed for vertical loads, such as wall plates on top of masonry walls.

Alternatively the 600mm Light Engineered Restraint Strap is lightweight yet robust, and very strong. It is quick and easy to install and eliminates the need to notch joists. The strap complies with BS EN 845-1 and is available in 800mm Light Engineered Restraint Strap, 1000mm Light Engineered Restraint Strap and 1200mm Light Engineered Restraint Strap.
