What does SDS stand for?

SDS is the name given to the original slotted drive system originally created by Bosch®. However, there is no definite answer to the real meaning of the acronym SDS. Some people believe is an acronym for “Slotted Drive System” whilst others believe that the acronym derives from the German phrase “Steck-Dreh-Sitz” (insert, twist, secure).

Types of SDS drill bits.

There are three main types of SDS bits: SDS, SDS Plus and SDS Max. So, what are the differences between them?

SDS Drill Bits.

SDS drill bits feature double grooves on the shank that keep the bits secure and facilitate the hammer action on SDS drills.

SDS Plus Drill Bits.

SDS Plus is an improvement on the original SDS system and is one of the most commonly used types of SDS bits. Both SDS and SDS Plus have a 10mm shank and are interchangeable. SDS Plus drill bits feature two open grooves and two closed grooves. These are designed for lighter duty work and smaller holes.

There are sizes of SDS Plus or SDS+ drill bits, including 20mm sds plus drill bit, 4mm sds plus drill bit and 12mm sds plus drill bit. These are available in various diameters and lengths.

SDS Max Drill Bits.

SDS Max drill bits have an 18mm shank and three open grooves with a locking segment attached. SDS Max bits are designed for deeper and more demanding drilling jobs than SDS and SDS Plus drill bits, as these are able to withstand more force and torque. Some SDS Max bits include 30mm sds drill bit and 20mm sds max drill bit.

Which drill bit is best?

Depends on the application. For heavy-duty applications, SDS Max drill bits are ideal whilst for smaller projects, SDS Plus will be the right choice.
