Coach bolts are mostly used to hold together wood to wood, however, can also be used to fix metal to wood and even metal to metal. Carriage bolts are used alongside a nut to firmly tighten the connection between the bolt and the material.

How to measure coach bolt length?
The length of coach bolts can be measured from the underside of the head to the end of the threaded portion. Carriage bolts can be searched for using the thread diameter. For instance, M12 coach bolts have a thread diameter of 12 millimetres and M20 coach bolts have a thread diameter of 20 millimetres.

How to:
Step 1. Use a drill bit that is just large enough to let the threads pass through the material.
Step 2. Drill through the material.
Step 3. Insert the bolt and tap the head in.
Step 4. Add a washer and nut on the other side of the bolt. Use a ratchet or spanner to tighten the bolt.
